The Talent Show- Poem

Jimmy is a strange boy,

no one quite knows what to make of him.

Lilly is a strange girl,

everyone believes something is wrong with her.

Together, they make Jimmy and Lilly, Lilly and Jimmy.

Nuts, the students said.

Special, the school said.

Not ours, the parents said.

Lilly and Jimmy, Jimmy and Lilly,

they didn’t care, never cared.

When they were together, they felt equal,

so the world could fall away

and the hours raced by.

Then came the night of the talent show.

Jimmy walked in, then Lilly walked in.

No one knew what they were planning.

One by one the students went up,

sang, danced, made music, bowed, applause.

Then Lilly and Jimmy, Jimmy and Lilly, stood.

They walked to the stage.

Clunk, clunk, clunk, said their shoes.

What’s going on? said the students.

Should we get them down? said the school.

They’re going to ruin the day. said the parents.

Jimmy and Lilly, Lilly and Jimmy stood,

center stage,

together.

Then, they spoke.

And as they spoke people began to think

and understand

and feel ashamed

They spoke, they bowed, they waited, and waited.

Applause.

We’re so proud. said the parents.

Beautiful. said the school.

I’m sorry. said the students.

Lilly and Jimmy, Jimmy and Lilly got off stage.

Clunk, clunk, clunk.

The talent show was over.

It was clear who won.
