Book Review-Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Caraval by Stephanie Garber is a completely unique and wild adventure story. It comes out on January 10th and I would definitely recommend this as a young adult read for ages 12 and up. This book has EVERYTHING: magic, romance, mystery, and lots of twisting adventure.

Scarlett lives on a remote island with her sister, Tella and their terrifying father. Scarlett has always looked out for Tella, doing her best to keep them safe from the abuse of their father. Her one hope for their survival is getting off of the island. Her father has arranged a marriage for her and while it gives both girls great hope for a better life, Scarlett’s childhood dreams of attending Caraval are crushed.

Caraval is a once-a-year performance, part magic show, part live-action mystery where those attending have the choice of watching, or participating in the games. The whole thing is run by a mastermind called Legend, a man that no one knows anything about.

This year, Scarlett’s invitation to the games arrives and Tella, with the help of a sailor, Julian, whisk Scarlett away from the island to attend Caraval. Chaos ensues as soon as they reach the games and the real fun begins.

Stephanie Garber creates a fantastic world with themes of acceptance, self-discovery, and bravery running through it all. This is a really good read for anyone who enjoys fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, or mysteries. Teens and adults alike could enjoy this read, and the writing by Garber itself draws you in so thoroughly that you won’t be able to put the book down.

I read this book as an Advanced Reader Copy which is the pre-publication edition of a book sent out by publishers for review and publicity. The reviews I leave here are my honest opinions of the books I’ve been reading and have really enjoyed. I’m not payed to say any of this, I just liked the books! If you liked the review, let me know! If you have any particular requests for genres, authors, or titles, I’d be happy to oblige. Keep your eyes open for more reviews like this coming soon, there are some great books coming out in the next few months!
