Book Review- Fetch by Nicole Georges

I know that some people are really skeptical about graphic novels, so I wanted to share one that comes out this month that may convert people to the genre. The book ‘Fetch’ by Nicole Georges comes out on July 18th and is a fantastic graphic memoir that really reads like a novel.

Georges tells the story of her childhood and a dog named Beija. She and Beija came together as children and grew up together, navigating the tricky world. FullSizeRender 2

Beija is one of those hellish dogs that everyone looks at and wonders how the family has kept it after all those years, but for anyone who has had one of those dogs, you will understand and love Georges’ stories of wrecked furniture, failed dinner parties, and strained relationships all because of the naughty pup.

Georges’ frank storytelling brings to light the path of self-discovery through loving a troublesome dog and will have you laughing and crying page after page. Not everyone is able to fully capture the complicated relationships of dogs and humans, let alone rescue dogs and struggling humans, but this book is the only one I have every read that truly articulated (and illustrated) what it means to grow up with your dog.

I’ve had two dogs in my life. One was around from my birth to my teenage years and the other from my teenage years to the present. The first dog was an angel to me, a devil to the rest of the world, and the one I’ve got now is by far the sweetest, quirkiest dog ever. Somehow, Georges manages to capture both of my dogs in her depiction of Beija and I think that will be the case for anyone with a dog in their lives.

This book is good for ages 16 and up, and will definitely hit home for all dog lovers. It’s the perfect gateway graphic novel as the illustrations pair perfectly with Nicole Georges’ style of writing. The book as I said comes out on July 18th, and I would really recommend giving it a read.

I read this book as an Advanced Reader Copy which is the pre-publication edition of a book sent out by publishers for review and publicity. The reviews I leave here are my honest opinions of the books I’ve been reading and have really enjoyed. I’m not payed to say any of this, I just liked the books! If you liked the review, let me know! If you have any particular requests for genres, authors, or titles, I’d be happy to oblige. Keep your eyes open for more reviews like this coming soon, there are some great books coming out in the next few months!
